Trains have been adapted to the extreme weather and particular geographical characteristics. To this end, the technology of the high speed railway trains has been improved by reinforcing the systems with the so-called ‘desert pack’, developed by Talgo.
This pack features more than 30 additional technologies incorporated into this project. These are aimed to making the train more efficient in all environmental conditions and to improving maintenance efficiency.

Blowers

Each of the train’s power cars has two blowers installed to blow the sand away from the rail. This measure is complementary to the rail maintenance and cleaning works.

Special protections on paint and windows

Each train is coated with a special paint in order to protect them from abrasion and rust caused by suspended desert dust. The glass on passenger coaches’ windows and locomotive windshields has a protective film attached to prevent scratches by suspended dust.

Air purifiers in High Speed Railways La Mecca Medina

Air purifiers filters

Each train is fitted with a series of air purifiers that expel any dust that may enter the passenger coaches.

This technology is based on the filters used in military helicopters. Likewise, some equipment that was previously on the train’s lower frame has been placed on the roof, to avoid external exposure and the risk of being damaged by suspended dust particles.

Temperature over 50º

Each train has increased electrical equipment protection and insulation. This also enables the equipment to withstand temperatures above 50ºC The joints have been specially and carefully designed to maintain the insulation level.
