Stationary and mobile communications

The communication systems are the artery through which information on the railway operation flows in real time.

The stationary communication system is carried in a fibre optic wire which runs along two conduits, one on each side of the track, parallel to the railway route along the entire 449 kilometres of the line.

The fibre optic is separated in each of the technical buildings of the line as well as in the workshops, maintenance bases and control centres. The electronic network of each of the technical quarters of the technical buildings and one-of-a kind buildings is deployed on the fibre optic structure. This electronic network provides two networks, a 1 Gbps operation network for the operational systems (operational network) and a 10 Gbps network for the support systems (administrative network).

Both networks are securitised via the use of isolated VLAN and a firewall that filters the network traffic and prevents unauthorised access to it.

The SDH transmission network, whose features exceed the requirements of the tender, is a system that has been broadly proven in the market, is completely reliable and compact for a line like this one, and has additional capacities in the event of high redundancy via the Core Backbone STM-16 solution. This network has been proven as a base transmission system for level-2 ETCS systems in commercial projects and provides a highly robust yet energy-efficient architecture.

The corporate IP telephony is delivered over the stationary communication network, which provides voice communications for the internal extensions in the main buildings, such as the control centres, workshops and maintenance bases. The corporate IP telephony network corporate is interconnected with the outside world via a gateway so that calls can be made to and from the outside.

In the one-of-a kind buildings like the data centre, the operation control centre, workshops and railway stations, IP network architectures have been deployed supported on fibre optic which unify voice, data, ticketing and passenger information into a single network. The main characteristics of it are: IP/Ethernet port access at a gigabit speed for voice, data, CCTV, ticketing, Passenger Information Service (PIS) and any IP-enabled device implemented in the Rail Solution of the secure, flexible and scalable IP network, which is capable of handling future services and demands for growth in traffic.

For the data centres and accesses, state-of-the-art equipment with advanced performance in IP traffic was supplied.

The GSM-R mobile communication network provides mobile communication among the trains circulating on the line and the control centres in real time. The communication between the train and the infrastructure takes place via 73 mobile GSM communication towers scattered along the line, which are in turn connected via fibre optic.

Mobile communications enable information to be exchanged in real time between the onboard signalling systems and their corresponding stationary parts, voice communication between the operators in the control centre and the train conductors, and even control of the train loudspeakers from the control centre.

Finally, the iConnect console located at the desks of the control centre operators provides an integrated interface for voice communication, comprising both IP intercoms and GSM-R communications.

In this way, a control centre operator can communicate with any internal extension or with the conductor of any train simply by touching the screen of the iConnect terminal.
